Bookmaker review

Betfair Exchange

Betfair Exchange is the original peer-to-peer betting marketplace. It scores 4.0/5: unmatched liquidity on horse racing and Premier League, genuinely better prices than retail sportsbooks, offset by a learning curve and 2-5% commission on net winnings.

How the exchange actually works

You are betting against other customers rather than the book. A back bet is what you know: you wager on an outcome at posted odds. A lay bet is the opposite - you accept someone else's back bet and take the other side. If the outcome does not happen, you keep their stake.

Betfair takes a commission on your net winnings, not on turnover. Base commission is 5% and drops as you accrue Betfair Points.

Real price advantage vs. retail

On horse racing at SP and Premier League 1X2 markets, Betfair prices are usually 3-7% better than high-street sportsbook prices. That advantage is what makes the exchange model worth the commission hit over time.

On niche or low-liquidity markets the gap closes and slippage rises. Stick to the main markets until you understand depth.

Commission, fees and premium charge

Base commission: 5% on net market winnings, billed per market. The Betfair Points scheme discounts this rate progressively.

Premium charge: If you are a long-term winning player, Betfair applies an additional premium charge of up to 60% on weekly net winnings in certain jurisdictions. Read the terms before you scale.

Markets where the exchange wins

UK and Irish horse racing: deepest liquidity of any platform. You can get matched at the prices you see on-screen in most cases. In-running trading is the main reason professional punters use Betfair at all.

Premier League, Champions League, ATP tennis: large matched volumes, better prices than retail. American sports, lower-tier football, most niche sports: liquidity thins out - check matched volume on the market before you take a position.

Platform, tools and in-play trading

The web platform is functional but dated. Serious traders use third-party tools - Geeks Toy, Bet Angel, Gruss Betting Assistant - which plug into the API and give ladder interfaces, one-click trading and stop-losses.

The mobile app is better than the desktop interface for casual users. Cash out works on back bets but not on open lay positions.

Safety and regulation

Betfair is owned by Flutter Entertainment, the FTSE-listed parent of Paddy Power, Sky Betting and FanDuel. It holds full UKGC, MGA and state-level US licenses.

Customer funds are segregated. Responsible-gambling tooling is thorough, including deposit, loss and time limits, and links into GAMSTOP for UK users.
